Warm Homes and Climate Justice: A Common Perspective.
Warm Homes and Climate Justice: A Common Perspective.
In the midst of the energy crisis, many people can no longer take affordable and warm housing for granted. In response to the crisis, the federal government is massively expanding natural gas infrastructure and misses the heat transition. Instead of people, mega-landlords and fossil fuel corporations are profiting, leading us deeper and deeper into the climate catastrophe.

The solutions are clear: The energy savings potential in housing is so great that the expansion of fossil energies is unnecessary. Democratization of housing and heating systems can enable climate-friendly solutions in the long term. But for this to happen, we need to build people power.
Therefore, we invite you to discuss together on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 10 am to 5 pm in Berlin:
- Is the heat transition a relevant policy field for climate justice and rent movements?
- What are the perspectives of socialization in the heat sector and how do they relate to the socialization of housing?
- What are tactics and possibilities of organizing for movement actors?
- How can we fight for a climate-friendly heat transition that relieves the burden on tenants?
- How can we as a movement prepare for next winter?
We invite people from tenant and climate justice movements as well as organizations, groups and experts from the field of socialization and energy/heat. With these discussion questions we want to find starting points for organizing in the field of heat and share knowledge about the perspectives for democratic ownership. Above all, the meeting should be a space for exchange and getting to know different movement actors and can serve as an impulse for further planning.
Please register until April 15.

Solidarity will win
How do you ensure that a meeting goes well? What do you have to consider and prepare? How do you stay in contact? How do you work well together in the long term? What could a concrete action look like? What experiences do you already have? The IL Berlin has written a brochure that supports you in founding and organizing groups with concrete tips and ideas:
Race-Class-Narrative: An answer to the culture war from the right?
Race-Class Narrative: A response to the culture war from the right?
Practical Workshop with Funmibi Ogunlesi and Alex Leon (New Economic Organizers’ Network)

The right has been on the rise ever since it succeeded in portraying all those who stand for progress and justice as a “woke elite” who want to impose their way of life on “ordinary people”. They pit white workers against immigrant and post-migrant workers, ecological against social, hey incite fear and division – racism is their most powerful tool to prevent social progress for all.
A compelling narrative to resist this right-wing narrative is lacking so far. In a workshop, Funmibi Ogunlesi and Alex Leon from the British New Economic Organizers’ Network (NEON) present the race-class narrative, an approach that could be an answer to the culture war from the right. The communications concept was developed after Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory in the U.S. and has since been used and developed with success in many progressive campaigns in various countries. NEON provides training, networking and consulting for social movements in the UK and works with the race-class narrative.
The culture war narrative is used by right-wingers right around the globe; to effectively thwart their strategy, we need to learn from each other. In the workshop, we therefore want to test the race-class narrative in practice with activists from social movements, movement organizations and trade unions and to discuss whether the concept can also be an inspiration in Germany.
The number of participants is limited to 10 persons, therefore registration is necessary.

Collective strategy development
The Phase5 collective has published a reader with methods to support groups, initiatives and alliances in the joint development of strategies. Behind this is a feminist claim: As many as possible should be involved in the formulation of longer-term plans, so that all the different perspectives become visible, disputable and decidable.
1 to 1 conversations
1-to-1 conversations are part of the toolkit of all organizers. There are different 1-to-1 conversations. This handout from the Bewegungsschule contains a guideline for an approximately 45-minute personal conversation between a more active person (organizer) and a less active person.
