In the midst of the energy crisis, many people can no longer take affordable and warm housing for granted. In response to the crisis, the federal government is massively expanding natural gas infrastructure and misses the heat transition. Instead of people, mega-landlords and fossil fuel corporations are profiting, leading us deeper and deeper into the climate catastrophe.

The solutions are clear: The energy savings potential in housing is so great that the expansion of fossil energies is unnecessary. Democratization of housing and heating systems can enable climate-friendly solutions in the long term. But for this to happen, we need to build people power.

Therefore, we invite you to discuss together on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 10 am to 5 pm in Berlin:

• Is the heat transition a relevant policy field for climate justice and rent movements?
• What are the perspectives of socialization in the heat sector and how do they relate to the socialization of housing?
• What are tactics and possibilities of organizing for movement actors?
• How can we fight for a climate-friendly heat transition that relieves the burden on tenants?
• How can we as a movement prepare for next winter?

We invite people from tenant and climate justice movements as well as organizations, groups and experts from the field of socialization and energy/heat. With these discussion questions we want to find starting points for organizing in the field of heat and share knowledge about the perspectives for democratic ownership. Above all, the meeting should be a space for exchange and getting to know different movement actors and can serve as an impulse for further planning.
